Traditional Mexican Punch

Ingredients to make traditional Mexican Punch:

  1. 4 liters of water
  2. 10 grams of Cinnamon
  3. 125 grams of Prune
  4. 1 kilogram of Tejocote
  5. 1 kilogram of Guava
  6. 1 kilogram of sugar cane
  7. 200 grams of Piloncillo or panela
  8. 1 handful of hibiscus flower
  9. 100 grams of Tamarind

How to make Traditional Mexican Ponche:

  • We gather all the ingredients and proceed to wash and chop the fruit to start preparing the Christmas punch.
  • Trick: These fruits are the ones we usually use, but there is no limit to preparing it to taste.
  • We proceed to chop the guava and the tejocotes, from which we remove the base and the crown and cut them into four. We clean the cane by removing the bark and cut it into four, making small sticks. We remove the shell from the tamarind.
  • In a container we put 4 liters of water to boil. There we add the cinnamon, the hibiscus flower, the tamarind and the piloncillo. Let boil for 10 minutes.
  • Immediately we add the hawthorn and the guava to continue with the preparation of the fruit punch.
  • Add the cane cut into sticks and stir in the fruit mixture.
  • Finally, we add the prunes to the Christmas punch.
  • Let it continue to boil for another 10 minutes. We test the flavor, rectify and if we consider it necessary we add another piece of piloncillo.
  • Trick: It is important to let it boil so that the fruit releases its sweet flavor and then rectify.
  • If we are going to add the rum, we must let it cool down a bit so that the alcohol does not evaporate. We serve the traditional punch to celebrate Christmas, accompanied by empanadas, tacos and, of course, stuffed turkey.
