Ingredients to make Tamarind Shrimp:

  • 300 grams of peeled shrimp
  • 8 tamarind pods
  • 2 chipotle chilies
  • 45 grams of sugar
  • 1 piece of onion finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove finely chopped
  • ½ cup of white wine or chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 cup of water (240 milliliters)
  • 1 pinch of paprika
  • salt to taste

How to make Tamarind Shrimp:

  1. To start the tamarind shrimp, clean the tamarind pods. If you wish, you can also remove the seeds; cook them with the water and sugar for 10 minutes.
  2. When the tamarind has softened, transfer it to the blender, add the chipotle pepper and blend at high speed for 3 minutes.
  3. Trick: if you want more spiciness you can add more amount of chipotle pepper.
  4. Then strain the tamarind mixture. If it is too thick, add a little water, pour in the white wine and mix very well.
  5. Tip: if you don’t want to use white wine, you can replace it with chicken broth, beef broth, or simply water.
  6. In a saucepan, heat a tablespoon of olive oil and fry the finely chopped onion and garlic clove for a few minutes.
  7. When the onion and garlic have changed color, pour in the strained tamarind sauce for shrimp, season to taste and cook for 5 minutes over medium heat, stirring constantly to prevent burning.
  8. Sauté the shrimp in a pan with a little olive oil, season with a little salt and a pinch of paprika.
  9. Serve the tamarind shrimp bathing them with the sauce and accompany with white rice. To eat!
