When it comes to typical sweets, Mexico is one of the countries with the most variety. In addition, in many regions of the country, ingredients are used to the maximum to make them unique and special sweets. Borrachitos are a kind of bonbon made with corn starch and various flavors with a slight liquor flavor that is usually rum or tequila, hence its peculiar name. Being a sweet with alcohol, it is not recommended for children, but if you want to adapt it for them, simply omit the rum or tequila.

  • 2 cups of water (480 milliliters)
  • 50 grams of corn starch
  • 3 tablespoons of rum or tequila
  • To decorate
  • ½ cup of sugar (100 grams)

How to make Sweet Borrachitos:

  1. To start with the sweet borrachitos recipe, first heat 1 and a half cups of waterin a pot.
  2.  When it starts to boil, add the sugar and mix gently until completely dissolved. Lower the temperature a bit to medium low.
  3. Then add the gelatin envelope of the flavorthat you like the most, mix until the gelatin dissolves very well.
  4. In a container, mix half a cup of warm water with the cornstarchuntil both ingredients are fully integrated.
  5. Pour the dissolved starch into the potand continue mixing until slightly thickened. Then turn off the heat and let cool. When the mixture is warm, add the rum and stir one last time.
  6. Trick: we recommend you temper the mixture so that when you add the liquor, its flavor is preserved.
  7. When the mixture is ready, transfer it to a refractory or rectangular moldand refrigerate for at least 3 hours so that it takes consistency. You can also let it set at room temperature for 1 hour.
  8. After the time in the refrigerator, it is time to cut the borrachitos
  9. To do this, use a plastic knife or shovel and cut into a rectangular shape, approximately 6 cm long.
  10. Remove carefully and sprinkle with sugar, repeat until you finish all the rum borrachitos.
  11.  We recommend that when you remove them from the refrigerator, you should leave them at room temperature for a few minutes so that they do not sweat due to the change in temperature.
