How to make Stuffed Arepas:
1.We will start with the sweet potato arepas. To make them, cut a few marks with a knife along the sweet potato and place it in a microwaveable container. Then, cover it with transparent paper and program the device for 13 minutes at maximum power.
2.While the sweet potato is cooking in the microwave, we begin to prepare the traditional corn arepa. Then, mix the water with the flour and the butter, knead until you get a homogeneous mixture that comes off easily from your hands. Form a ball and wrap in transparent paper. Reserve.
3.We recover the sweet potato from the microwave and make a puree by mixing it with turmeric and water. As the dough thickens, slowly add the flour and knead until you get a smooth dough that does not stick to your hands. Also make a ball and wrap it in plastic wrap.
4.Next, it is time to prepare the banana and ginger arepas, for which we will repeat the previous processes. Mix all the ingredients to form a soft dough that is not sticky. Wrap the dough until it is time to form the arepas.
5.With the three dough’s ready we will begin to shape the arepas. To do this, take a portion of dough, shape it round and flatten it with your hands. If you have never made arepas and you have doubts about the shape, you can review the recipe for Venezuelan arepas.
6.To cook the arepas, place them on a griddle over medium heat and turn them until both sides are lightly toasted. The process can take between 10-15 minutes. If you want, you can give them a final touch in the oven for about 5 minutes.
7.Now we are going to cook the fillings. Add a little oil to the same griddle and fry the chicken cut into thin strips, if the griddle is large, you can cook the spinach as well. Remember to season the chicken and cook until it is golden brown and ready just like the spinach.
8.Assemble the arepas by following these instructions:
- Chicken arepas: Open an arepa and place chicken portions with a little mustard
- Sweet potato arepas: Open the arepas and fill with very finely chopped radishes and spinach
- Traditional arepas: Fill them with a paste of ham and oil, grated cheese and tomato slices
9.You can combine the stuffed arepas with the ingredients you want and remember that you can also take a look at the pavilion arepa recipe or the oatmeal arepas if you are on a diet.
