Ingredients to make Spiritual Code:

  • 250 grams of salted cod
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 onion
  • 1 potato
  • 2 slices of dry bread
  • For the béchamel:
  • 250 milliliters of milk
  • 30 grams of wheat flour
  • 30 grams of butter
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 20 grams of grated cheese

How to make Spirit Code:

  1. Cook the salted cod in a saucepan with hot water for 3 minutes over medium heat. Turn off the heat and leave the fish in the water.
  2. Peel the potatoes and cut them into very thin strips. Heat a pan with plenty of oil and, when hot, fry them, take them out and reserve them on absorbent kitchen paper. If you want to make the spiritual cod without potatoes, skip this step.
  3. Prepare the béchamel. To do this, melt the butter in a saucepan and toast the flour. Go adding the milk little by little and without stopping stirring until you get a thick cream. Add a little salt to taste and reserve.
  4. Very small spiritual cod. Clean the carrot and grate it to obtain very fine strips, although you can also chop it into very small pieces. The spiritual cod is characterized by having a much chopped sauce.
  5. Heat a frying pan with a little oil or use the same frying pan that you used to fry the potatoes, but removing as much oil as possible. When hot, sauté the onion and carrot.
  6. Cut 3 slices of bread from the day before and place them in a bowl with a little milk so that it soaks well. So that the bread is tender and juicy, leave it like this for about 15 minutes.
  7. Take the cod from the saucepan, remove the bones and skin and chop it up.
  8. Add the cod to the pan with the sauce and stir. Add the bread soaked in milk, mix again and add a little salt if necessary. Mix and cook everything together for a couple of minutes.
  9. Add all the preparation in a baking dish and distribute it evenly.
  10. Place the fries covering the entire preparation without leaving gaps. Another totally valid option is to make the spiritual cod with sweet potato (sweet potato) instead of potatoes. For this case, you should also cut the sweet potato into thin strips and fry them.
  11. Cover everything with the béchamel and distribute a layer of grated cheese.
  12. Cook the spiritual cod in the oven until the cheese is melted. To do this, activate the grill function if you have it. When it’s golden, take it out and enjoy this amazing Portuguese spirit cod recipe.
