The aroma of popcorn has the power to conjure up images of fun, joyful and colorful places. As soon as you perceive its smell, it transports you to spaces as distant as the seats of the cinema or a colorful circus with its jugglers and clowns. Perhaps to others, it reminds them more of amusement parks, town squares or parishes where patron saint festivities or some local event are celebrated. Wherever it is, popcorn symbolizes celebration, relaxation and excitement.

But… surprise! Popcorns represent much more than that, because these grains can also provide great benefits for the body. For this reason, in addition to how much fun it is to prepare and eat them; we brings you the well-known recipe for homemade popcorn.

Wait a minute, there’s more… If you think that popcorn, as they are known in Venezuela, are complicated to prepare, you will be surprised by the simplicity of the procedure for these popcorn in a pan.

The steps are very simple: heat the oil in a frying pan, when it is hot, place the raw corn, wait for the first explosion and… Let the fun begin! The corn kernels open like cocoons while the classic sound is heard… thump, thump, and thump! It’s quite a show! Then, when serving the cotufas in a pan, you can season them with salt or butter and… Let’s enjoy! Though if you want to reap the health benefits of popcorn, you should avoid adding butter, salt, and oil.

Yes, homemade popcorn has it all: fun, ease, health and… Economy! Preparing them is very economical because you only need two basic ingredients: oil and corn. With just a handful of corn, you have enough popcorn to fill you up. A very small investment for long moments of fun and relaxation.

Ingredients to make Pan Popcorn:

  • 60 grams of raw corn
  • 2 olive or sunflower oil
  • 1 pinch of Butter (to taste)
  • 1 pinch of salt (to taste)

How to make Pan Popcorn:

Place the raw corn, salt and oil on the table. Then, have all the ingredients in the proportions suggested by this delicious recipe for popcorn in a pan and… Get to work! Heat a frying pan with oil. If the pan is non-stick, much better, so you can use less fat to cook  homemade popcorn. Wait until the oil is very hot, before putting the grains.

Place the corn in the pan so that it forms a single layer, there should be no kernels on top of kernels or they will not all cook. Cover the pan with a lid so that the homemade popcorn doesn’t fly out when it pops. Remember when placing the lid, leave a small space for steam to escape. When you hear the first popcorns explode in the pan, lower the flame to medium temperature.

Then, when you stop hearing popping, turn off the burner and uncover. Before serving, select the grains that did not pop and remove them. Add salt and/or butter to taste for homemade popcorn, to your liking.
