Ingredients to make Ripe Plantain Arepas without cornmeal:

  • 3 pieces of ripe bananas
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

How to make Ripe Plantain Arepas without cornmeal:

To start this delicious recipe for arepas without cornmeal, you must cook the ripe plantains. Place a saucepan with enough water to cover them. Turn the burner on medium heat, 5 to 10 minutes, this will depend on the test of the fork. Prick the bananas with a fork to confirm that they are soft but not watery, they should retain their consistency. If they are soft but consistent, the cooking is ready.

Strain the bananas, let them drain the water well and let them cool slightly before removing the peel. Put the cooked bananas in a bowl. Prepare a mashed banana right away, so don’t let them get cold, this will make it easier to make. When the puree is ready, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes.

Trick: The secret of the whole recipe: do not overcook the plantain, thus achieving a good purée and a subsequent excellent dough.

Knead the mashed banana very well, until you find no lumps and achieve a compact consistency. Salt is optional, I don’t add it to this recipe for ripe plantain arepas.

If you notice that the dough is dry, wet your hands with a little water or oil. Remember, ripe bananas have a lot of moisture, so you probably won’t have this problem. On the contrary, if the dough is very sticky, let it rest for a while to compact.

Make a ball with the dough. Divide the sphere into two parts and create two more balls.  Shape each sphere of dough into a disc to form the Venezuelan arepas de plantain without cornmeal.

Tip: Heat a pan while you make the dough. It is important that the pan is very hot before placing the arepas.

Cook the ripe plantain arepas without flour in the pan or griddle for 5 minutes on each side. If you use a non-stick pan, much better. You can complete the cooking by covering the Venezuelan arepas with a pot lid, for a minute or two. Another option may be to put the arepas in the oven, one minute on each side. Also, you can cook them right in the oven from scratch. To do this, preheat the oven to 180 ºC; Use a non-stick baking tray or cover the tray with parchment paper (parcel paper or parchment paper) to place the arepas.

Trick: Moisten the pan or griddle with a little oil to prevent the arepas from sticking. You should do this whenever you prepare arepas if the pan is not non-stick.

My favorites! Yes, the potato, plantain, Chinese ocumo and sweet potato arepas represent a fascination for me. Although I like Venezuelan arepas in their various presentations, I can eat these arepas in particular… all day long!

What do I like to fill these ripe plantain arepas without cornmeal with? MMM! Cream cheese, white cheese or any type of cheese. However, proteins are also a perfect option if you do not follow a vegetarian or vegan diet: ground meat, meatloaf, fish, chicken and beans. And with…, pavilion! These arepas remind me of the Venezuelan patacones, for their incredible combinations. Banana is very versatile! Be it ripe or green.
