Ingredients to make Puff pastry stuffed with ham and cheese:

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry
  • 5 slices of ham
  • 5 slices of cheese
  • 1 handful of grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg

How to make Puff Pastry Stuffed with Ham and Cheese:

We start by spreading the sheet of puff pastry and placing a layer of ham. Leave the edges free, as seen in the photo, to make it easier to close it when wrapping our stuffed bread.

For this savory puff pastry recipe you can use any type of sweet ham, such as cooked ham, chicken or turkey ham. My recommendation is to use the smoked or braised type, which gives it a great touch. We continue now with the layer of cheese, then start by placing the slices as seen in the photo. As with the ham, you can also vary the type of cheese for our stuffed puff pastry, I have used Gouda-type cheese, but you can use any other of your choice. To finish with the filling we must  spread the Mozzarella cheese, from the center of our puff pastry sheet, towards the sides. Do not exceed the amount of cheese to prevent it from overflowing when cooking the bread.

Now make a roll with the puff pastry sheet, as seen in the photo. Moisten the final edge of the sheet with a little water so that it sticks and the puff pastry is well closed.

To seal the side edges, flatten a little with the help of a rolling pin and then fold inwards. In this way you will have a perfect roll and the edges will be crushed with the same weight of the bread.

Prick all the puff pastry with ham and cheese with a fork and then make some cuts on the top, as seen in the photo. In this way we prevent the bread from puffing up too much during cooking.

Remember that if you want you can also make more elaborate decorations with some extra strips of puff pastry.

Then cook the puff pastry filled with ham and cheese in the oven preheated to 190º C for 30-45 minutes, with heat from above and below. After the first 20 minutes, open the oven and paint all the puff pastry bread with beaten egg to give it a bright hue.

Wait until you see that the puff pastry is golden and crispy. When the time is up, turn off the oven and leave the puff pastry inside for a few more minutes, until it cools down a bit. If you take it out of the oven too quickly, especially if the room temperature is very cold, it may go down and lose texture.
