Oat Arepas Recipe

In this recipe we are going to make some delicious oatmeal arepas, a healthy recipe for those who want to take care of themselves a little more. These corn and oatmeal arepas are typical in Colombia and Venezuela, where they are usually served with all kinds of accompaniments, such as pork ham, cheese and hogao. Let’s see the step by step of the recipe and its ingredients.

Ingredients to make Oatmeal Arepas:

  • 1 cup of water (240 milliliters)
  • 1 cup of oat flakes
  • 1 cup of corn flour (120 grams)
  • 4 units of mozzarella cheese
  • 4 units of pork ham
  • 1 pinch of onion salt
  • 1 pinch of black pepper

How to make Oatmeal Arepas:

1.Our first step to make the oatmeal arepas recipe is to pre-list the ingredients. Onion salt is onion powder with salt, you can get it in the condiments section of your usual supermarket.

2.To make the arepas dough, mix the corn flour and oat flakes in a bowl. Add a little onion salt and a little black pepper to taste to flavor.

3.Heat the water over medium heat until lukewarm.

4.Add the warm water to the bowl where we have the cornmeal mixture and the oatmeal flakes. Knead with your hands for a few minutes and let stand for 15 minutes.

5.Make the oatmeal arepas in a traditional way, as you would make a normal corn arepa. Ideally, they should have a round shape that you can get by flattening balls of dough with a wooden board or a medium plate.

6.Take a pan over medium heat and cook our homemade arepas.

7.Ideally, they should be golden as seen in the photograph.

8.Open the arepas in half, as if it were a sandwich, and add a slice of cheese and pork ham.

9.Take it back to the pan for a few minutes until the cheese melts and it is ready to serve.

10.Serve our oatmeal arepas with a delicious Colombian hogao. These healthy arepas are an ideal breakfast dish.
