Fried Battered Tofu Recipe

These tofu triangles are a perfect appetizer. They are breaded with panko, that is, thick breadcrumbs, seeds and spices. If you can’t find the panko, the best option is to grate a piece of stale bread (I grated a pretzel I had saved from the other day), since it will still be delicious. You can serve the tofu triangles with your favorite sauce, for example, guacamole, sweet and sour sauce, mustard, etc. Keep reading and discover how to make fried battered tofu, you’ll love it!

Ingredients to make Fried Battered Tofu:

  • 400 grams of tofu
  • ½ cup chickpea flour
  • ½ cup of water (120 milliliters)
  • 100 grams of panko
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds
  • ½ teaspoon of poppy seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 pinch of pepper
  • ½ teaspoon chopped coriander

How to make Fried Battered Tofu:

  1. Wrap the block of tofu in absorbent kitchen paper.
  2. Place something heavy on top and let drain for half an hour.
  3. Cut the tofu into thin slices lengthwise.
  4. Cut each sheet in half and then diagonally to obtain triangles of tofu.
  5. In a bowl, mix the chickpea flour with the water until you obtain a mixture with a consistency similar to that of a beaten egg.
  6. In this way, the sesame battered tofu will also be suitable for vegans.
  7. In another bowl, mix the panko with the seeds and spices.
  8. If you don’t have panko, grate a piece of stale bread or a pretzel, like I’ve done
  9. To coat the tofu, roll the triangles of tofu first in the chickpea flour and water mixture and then in the breadcrumbs.
  10. Heat a frying pan with oil and cook the triangles until golden brown on both sides or bake them at 180 degrees for half an hour.
  11. Serve fried battered tofu as an appetizer or as a side to any meal, such as a vegan red bean stew dish.
