Code Cake Recipe

There are thousands of dishes prepared with cod, but there is no doubt that one of our favorites is cod cake. This salty tart is a delight and can be eaten for lunch or dinner, since it is a digestive and healthy fish.

Cod cake is one of the most popular dishes in Portuguese gastronomy, especially in Lisbon. However, currently there are many versions of this very traditional recipe, so we can find it with different ingredients. We explain how to make cod and potato pie, you will love it!

Ingredients to make Cod Cake:

  • 8 pieces of salted cod without bones
  • 2 pieces of large potatoes
  • 1 piece of red pepper
  • 1 piece of sweet onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 glasses of milk
  • 1 pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 handfuls of raw peeled prawns
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 pinches of salt
  • 1 pinch of ground white pepper

How to make Cod Cake:

  1. Heat about three fingers of water in a pot; add the pieces of cod with the skin down and a bay leaf. Let the fish cook for 10 minutes without covering the pot completely. Meanwhile, microwave two potatoes with skin on. To do this, put them in an unsealed bag (microwaveable) and cook them for 12 minutes.
  2. Trick: If the potatoes are small you should reduce the time. Instead of a bag you can use plastic wrap.
  3. Finely chop the onion, pepper, tomato and garlic. Then, first fry the onion and pepper for 3 minutes and then add the garlic, tomato and prawns and let everything cook for another 4 minutes. If the prawns are large, chop them up.
  4. Carefully remove the skin from the cod and shred it to add it to the sauce, give it a few turns and let it cook for a couple of minutes. This will be enough to integrate the flavors of the cod cake, then turn off the heat and reserve the sauce.
  5. Place the boiled and peeled potatoes in a saucepan and mash them until they are pureed. You can use a utensil to mash the potatoes, as long as they are completely flattened.
  6. Separately, beat three eggs with a pinch of salt and reserve them for the end.
  7. Trick: Preheat the oven to 200ºg up and down.
  8. Heat two glasses of milk for 2 minutes in the microwave and pour them over the mashed potatoes, mix until you get a fine paste and heat it over medium heat while stirring constantly, its texture must be very thick to be able to form the cod cake.
  9. Add the spices to the mashed potato and a pinch of salt, stir so that they are integrated while the mash cooks for 3 more minutes. Then withdraw and reserve. Preheat the oven to 200ºC.
  10. In an oven-safe container, put a layer of mashed potato and flatten to continue with the cod pie filling. So, distribute the reserved sauce and place another layer of puree. Flatten each layer so that the cake is even.
  11. Pour the beaten egg over the cod cake and, if you wish, you can add grated cheese on top. Bake the cod cake for 40 minutes at 180ºC
  12. We decided to leave it alone with the beaten egg, but it is also delicious with the gratin cheese. When it’s ready, let it warm up a bit.
  13. When it is warm, you can serve your cod pie recipe accompanied by bagels and good American coleslaw.
