Chumbeque Recipe

Chumbeque is a typical sweet from the north of Chile, and it is one of the best desserts that you can find in the typical wheelbarrows of Chile and Peru, it began to be made in the mid-19th century. During important festivities, the famous chumbeques are usually made and, in addition, there are contests that teach how to make the largest chumbeque, then it is distributed among the visitors. To make this dessert you need flour, vegetable shortening and the necessary ingredients to make honey. This honey can have soursop, mango or lemon flavors.

Do you wonder how to make homemade chumbeque? In this article we want to teach you how to prepare this delicious dessert from your home. Follow these steps and make a traditional easy chumbeque!

Ingredients to make Chumbeque:

  • To make the honey
  • ½ cup of water (120 milliliters)
  • 1 handful of anise
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 orange (peel)
  • 1 lemon
  • 4 drops of red food coloring
  • 2 drops of yellow food coloring
  • To make the dough:
  • 3 tablespoons of achiote oil
  • 100 grams of vegetable shortening
  • ½ cup of water (120 milliliters)
  • 4 tablespoons of white sugar
  • 25 grams of dry yeast
  • ½ dessert spoon of anise
  • ½ dessert spoon of salt

How to make Chumbeque:

  1. Strain and reserve.
  2. In a medium saucepan add the white sugar and half a cup of water, cook over low heat for approximately 3 minutes.
  3. After time, add the anise, cinnamon, cloves, lemon juice, orange peel and coloring. Let cook over low heat until it has a honey texture.
  4. It is important that the orange peel does not have the white part because it can release a bitter taste.
  5. Trick: to know if the honey is ready, place a few drops in a container with water and if it forms a ball without a problem, it will be ready.
  6. When the honey is ready, you must strain it and reserve it.
  7. Mix the yeast with a little water and a pinch of sugar.
  8. In a bowl add the flour, anise and sugar. Form a volcano with the mixture and add the yeast in the center, also add water and tablespoons of achiote oil.
  9. Mix outward and gradually add room temperature butter.
  10. Mix by hand until a homogeneous mass is formed and let rest for approximately 20 minutes.
  11. Once the time has passed, divide the dough into two parts and stretch using a roller. Place the dough on a tray or sip at and make cuts in it.
  12. Bake at 175ºC for approximately 12-14 minutes. The easy Chumbeque recipe is almost ready!
  13. Remove and wait for the dough to cool down a bit.
  14. Spread the honey that you have previously prepared over the entire surface and cover it with the other dough.
  15. Cut into rectangles and you can now serve and enjoy. Let’s eat the Chumbeque nougat!
