Bean stew with cod is a vegetable dish that is usually served more frequently during Lent and Easter. On these dates it is traditional to prepare fish dishes, since they are very good, with a lot of flavor and provide many nutrients.

  • 4 pieces of desalted cod
  • 350 grams of dried beans
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 piece of green pepper
  • 1 dessert spoon of sweet paprika
  • 1 splash of oil
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of flour
  • 3 tablespoons of crushed tomato
  • 1 bunch of Swiss chard

How to make Bean stew with cod:

Soak the beans the day before for a minimum of 8-12 hours.

Desalt the cod pieces by soaking them for 48 hours and changing the water every 8 hours. You can also make the recipe for beans with cod already desalted and frozen to the point of salt. Put a few tablespoons of flour on a plate, dry the pieces of cod, pass them through the flour and fry them over high heat for a minute on each side.

Peel and chop the onion and the garlic cloves, wash the pepper and cut it into small pieces. Heat a saucepan with a splash of oil, fry the finely chopped onion, add the green pepper, fry it and add the chopped garlic cloves. Before the garlic browns, add the crushed tomato. Cook a few minutes all together. Add the teaspoon of sweet paprika, stir and mix.

Add the beans and cover everything with cold water. Let cook until it starts to boil, lower the heat a little and continue cooking. During cooking, add a glass of cold water. This is done to “scare” them and prevent the beans from breaking and peeling. Repeat this one more time. Also add a little salt, but not too much because then you have to add the cod.

Wash the chard leaves and, when the beans are half done, add them to the pan and cook everything until they are cooked. If you prefer, you can make the beans with cod and spinach.

Once you have the bean stew cooked, add the pieces of cod and let it all cook together for 5 minutes. Taste test in case salt is needed and rectify.
