Battered vegan fish fillets recipe

FoodsDiary By FoodsDiary

Battered or fried fish is the favorite dish of many people, but not everyone can eat it, either due to their eating habits or allergies. This battered fish recipe is totally vegan, that is, it does not contain any ingredients of animal origin. To replace the fish protein we are going to use tofu and to add the flavor of the sea to the fillets and create crispy skin we will use seaweed. You can serve these steaks with baked vegetables, rice, salad, etc. In any case, keep reading and learn how to make vegan fish.

Ingredients to make vegan fish fillets in batter:

  • 400 grams of tofu
  • 5 sheets of nori seaweed
  • 5 tablespoons of corn starch
  • 1 onion
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 pinch of pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • For the batter:
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ can of tonic or sparkling water (160 ml)
  • 1 cup of flour (140 grams)
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder (baking powder)

How to make Battered Vegan Fish Fillets:

  1. Crumble the tofu with your hands and place it on a colander covered with a clean kitchen towel or piece of cloth. Cover the tofu with a flat plate and place something heavy on top so that as much liquid as possible drains off. Let the tofu drain for 1 or 2 hours so that we can continue with the vegan fish recipe.
  2. Meanwhile, chop the onion very finely and fry until golden.
  3. Toast a sheet of nori seaweed in the pan until it changes color and blend it in the blender.
  4. Add the drained tofu to the pan with the onion, stir in the toasted seaweed, cornstarch, garlic and onion powder, mustard, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt and pepper. Cook the tofu for 5-7 minutes, flattening it slightly with a fork.
  5. Cut the remaining nori seaweed sheets into two halves. Place several tablespoons of tofu on each piece of seaweed and make a kind of envelope by folding the edges so that the filling does not come out and roll it up giving the vegan fish fillet an oval shape. To seal the edge of the seaweed, wet it with your fingers. Repeat with the other pieces of nori seaweed until the filling is finished.
  6. To coat the fillets, mix the flour with the yeast and the tonic in a bowl and pass each fillet through the mixture. Then pass the fillets through the breadcrumbs.
  7. Heat a pan with oil and fry the fillets on both sides until golden brown. And ready! You already have your vegan fish fillets in batter ready to serve.
