Ingredients to make Baked Bread Torrijas:

  • ½ liter of milk
  • 4 slices of sliced bread
  • ½ glass of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of Cinnamon powder
  • 1 egg
  • Zest of half a lemon

How to make Baked Bread Torrijas:

  1. To start preparing the baked Bimbo French toast, the first thing we must do is heat the milk. Mix the sugar with the cinnamon and add the mixture to the milk, along with the lemon zest. If you prefer, you can substitute the lemon zest for orange, since both will help flavor the milk.
  2. For the recipe to be as healthy as possible, the ideal is to use skimmed or semi-skimmed milk. But, if you don’t have any of these types, you can also use the entire one without problems.
  3. When it starts to boil, lower the temperature and leave the milk with sugar and cinnamon for 15 minutes over low heat. Stir to integrate the ingredients well. After this time, we remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool, since if we poured the hot milk over the slices, the bread could fall apart.
  4. Once cold, or semi cold, place the slices of bread on a tray with a high edge and pour the preparation, straining it with a sieve to remove the pieces of lemon zest. We let the bread soak and absorb the milk for approximately 45 minutes, turning it over to obtain juicy and delicious slicedbread Torrijas.
  5. When there are about 10 minutes left to finish the rest time, we preheat the oven to 200 ºC. Once the 45 minutes have passed, we take the tray from the oven, line it with parchment paper, paint with a little oil, drain the bread and place the slices with milk on it. We beat the egg and paint each slice. Although we have used a single egg, you could also mix a whole egg with a yolk. Once this is done, we bake the Bimbo bread Torrijas until they are golden brown. To speed up the process, we recommend activating the grill function and placing the tray in the upper center of the oven. This step can take you around 10 minutes.
  6. When they are golden, we turn the bread over, paint again with egg and let the homemade French toast bake on that side. Once ready, we remove them from the oven, sprinkle sugar on top and that’s it. If you want, you can also sprinkle a little more cinnamon powder, to your liking! As you can see, these baked sliced bread Torrijas are much healthier than traditional Torrijas because they are not cooked in oil, and the result is spectacular. If you prepare your own sliced bread, we recommend cutting slightly thicker slices so that the French toast is much juicier.
