Discover how to make kumquats in syrup with this simple recipe and make it when kumquats are in season. You can save them and enjoy them all year long!

Ingredients to make Kumquats in syrup:

  • 500 grams of kumquats
  • 250 grams of sugar (1¼ cups)
  • 250 grams of water
  • 1 teaspoon of coarse salt

How to make Kumquats in syrup:

  1. Wash the kumquats and pass them a sushi stick from the end until it comes out the other side. In this way, you can remove the seeds after cooking them and make kumquats in syrup without seeds.
  2. Trick: If you don’t have a sushi stick you can use a skewer or similar.
  3. Fill a pot with plenty of water and a teaspoon of coarse salt. Place the kumquats and boil them for about 5 minutes.
  4. Tip: If it is to your liking, you can add star anise and, after boiling, discard it.
  5. Strain the kumquats and discard the liquid.
  6. Then, press the kumquats one by one to remove the seeds, since they are what gives the fruit its bitterness.
  7. With this process you will also achieve that the kumquat is embedded inside with the syrup.
  8. By removing the seeds, and some of the pulp that will come out with them, you will reduce the weight of the kumquats by about half.
  9. By using 500 g of kumquats, the weight will be reduced to approximately 250 grams.
  10. For this step you must then use 250 grams of sugar and 250 cc of water. Heat the water along with the sugar, stirring with a wooden spoon to speed up the dissolving process. Then, add the kumquats and cook over low heat for 20 minutes.
  11. Tip: If you have a scale at home, you can weigh the kumquats so you know exactly how much sugar to use.
  12. However, half of the original weight is always calculated.
  13. When they are shiny, the easy and homemade kumquats in syrup are ready. Place them hot with the syrup in a sterilized jar and cover them.
  14. You can keep them very well in the refrigerator for months.
