Chickpeas with Cabbage Recipe

Who says that a spoon plate has to be something consistent and heavy? We are going to show that this is not always the case and we are going to prepare a wonderful recipe for chickpeas with cabbage. It is a delicious and simple dish to prepare, as well as healthy and balanced. It contains vegetables and legumes, both very important food groups to keep our body healthy.

To enhance the flavor of the dish we will add a piece of ham. However, this ingredient can be omitted entirely, thus turning the recipe into a vegetarian meal. Either way, here’s how to make chickpeas with cabbage, keep reading!

Ingredients to make Chickpeas with Cabbage:

  • 300 grams of cooked chickpeas
  • 1 piece of cabbage or cabbage
  • 1 piece of dried ham or bacon
  • 1 piece of onion
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 splash of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon gram masala
  • 2 glasses of water
  • 1 pinch of salt to taste
  • 1 cayenne (optional)

How to make Chickpeas with Cabbage:

1 Cut half a medium cabbage into narrow slices, chop the onion and garlic, chop the piece of ham to your liking and drain the cooked chickpeas. You can make the cabbage recipe with canned chickpeas or cook them the day before.

2 Pour a splash of oil into an express pot and when it is steaming, fry the pieces of garlic. Once they take color, also add the onion and fry it for 2 minutes. Then add the ham pieces and cook for 2 more minutes.

3 Pour in the water and let it come to a boil for a couple of minutes. You must bear in mind that each ingredient must release its flavor so that they all integrate with each other, so they are fried a few minutes beforehand and incorporated little by little; this is the key to making a simple chickpea stew with cabbage appetizing.

4 Add a cayenne to give a little touch of flavor to the stew. This ingredient is optional and can be replaced with sweet or hot paprika, a chilly… Then, add the bay leaves, a splash of olive oil and the gram masala.

Tip: If you can’t get gram masala, you can use curry and turmeric instead. Gram masala is a mixture of spices such as coriander, cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg, and cumin.

5 Add the chickpeas and the cut cabbage and cook in the pressure cooker for 10 minutes that will be enough. If you are making the chickpeas with sautéed cabbage recipe in a conventional pot or casserole, the cooking time will be approximately 30 minutes over low heat.

6 Salt test and rectify if you consider it necessary, although surely the ham already provides the right amount. Serve your recipe for chickpeas with cabbage and accompany the dish with a pink wine and a good salad.
