  1.  6 empanada disks
  2.  10 chard leaves
  3.  1 onion
  4.  ½ cup of milk (120 milliliters)
  5.  1 tablespoon cornstarch
  6.  ½ teaspoon pepper
  7.  1 teaspoon of nutmeg
  8.  1 egg (optional to paint)

How to make empanadas chard and white sauce:

  • To start with the chard and white sauce empanadas recipe, first peel and chop the onion into small cubes.
  • Sauté the onion in a frying pan with a teaspoon of oil over high heat until it begins to turn transparent. At that point, lower the heat to medium and add a tablespoon of water. Whenever it sticks, you should add more water. In this way, the onion will be caramelized with its own sugars.
  • Process the clean chard leaves together with the tender part of their ends, but not their leaves. You can reserve them to make this preparation of stuffed chard stalks.
  • Dissolve the tablespoon of cornstarch in cold milk and heat it for 30 seconds in the microwave. Next, remove it, mix and heat it for another 30 seconds until your white sauce has thickened.
  • Mix the white sauce with the processed chard leaves and the sautéed onion. Next, season the filling of your chard empanadas and white sauce to taste with nutmeg and pepper. Reserve until cool.
  • Tip: at this point you can modify the recipe to your liking by adding other condiments or ingredients, such as: fresh or grated cheese, bell pepper or carrot.
  • When your filling is cold, start filling the empanadas by wetting the edge of the middle of the disk and adding a tablespoon of the chard preparation in the center. Put some pressure on the edges and close them with a traditional pinch or the help of a fork.
  • Arrange your empanadas seam-side up so they brown evenly in the oven and, if you wish, you can brush them with egg to enhance their color. Then, cook them in the preheated oven at 200ºC-220ºC for 15 minutes or until the dough is golden.
