Viennese squares are a much-loved delight in Argentine confectionery. On this occasion, in this article we have prepared some delicious apple squares, very fresh and easy to make. The squares are ideal to accompany with breakfast or a snack and, thanks to the apple, the dough has a special moisture that you will love.

Ingredients to make Apple Squares:

  • For the mass
  • 150 grams of butter
  • 100 grams of sugar (½ cup)
  • 300 grams of flour
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 50 grams of ground walnuts
  • 1 egg
  • 1 yolk
  • For the filling
  • 1 kilogram of green apples
  • 1 cup of sugar (200 grams)
  • 1 cup of water (240 milliliters)

How to make Apple Squares:

  1. Start with the filling. Peel and cut the apples. Place them in a pot with the water and sugar and cook them.
  2. The apples are ready when you can puree them. Booking.
  3. Now, prepare the dough for the easy apple squares. To do this, place the flour with the baking powder and the ground nuts in a bowl.
  4. Once you have placed the dry ingredients, make a hole in the center and put the softened butter, sugar, egg and yolk.
  5. Knead from the center outwards and, once you have the dough formed, reserve it in the fridge so that it takes on a greater consistency.
  6. After about 20 minutes, remove the dough from the fridge and divide it into 2 buns. With one of them, line a medium greased mold suitable for the oven.
  7. Cover the dough that is in the mold with the apple puree and, on top, with the other half of the stretched dough, place a lid.
  8. Preheat the oven to medium temperature and bake for 35 minutes.
  9. When the cooking has finished, wait for it to cool down and cut the Viennese apple squares to serve them.
  10. You can cover the squares with a glaze made with lemon juice and icing sugar that will give a very pleasant finish to the palate.
