Recipe of Chayotes to the Mexican

If you are looking for a rich and low-calorie dish, Mexican-style chayotes are an excellent option. Chayote is a widely consumed vegetable in Mexico and in various regions of Central America. There are various recipes with this rich vegetable and, although many do not usually like its characteristic flavor, this Mexican-style chayote recipe can change your opinion.

Chayotes are also very cheap and profitable, so they are perfect to prepare in large families or when you need to make a dish that will last for several days. Discover how to make Mexican-style chayotes and follow our steps to the end.

Ingredients to make Mexican Chayotes:

  • 1 chayote
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 serrano peppers
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

How to make Chayotes Mexican style:

Wash, peel and chop the chayote into small or medium cubes as you prefer.

Tip: peeling the chayote can dry out your hands due to the juice it releases, if you want to avoid this, spread a little oil or use kitchen gloves.

Boil enough water with a little salt to taste and add the chopped chayote, let it cook for at least 10 to 12 minutes until slightly softened. Then, drain the water and run under cold running water to stop the cooking and set aside.

Tip: do not overcook the chayote, since in the end you will skip it and it will finish cooking.

While you let the chayote cook, chop the vegetables into small cubes (the tomato, the serrano pepper and the onion).

Trick: remove the seeds from the tomato and, if you prefer, also clean the serrano chili to reduce the itchiness.

In a pan or pot, heat a tablespoon of butter or oil, add the onion and serrano pepper and cook for a few minutes until the onion begins to turn transparent.

Then, add the diced tomato, season with a little salt and pepper to taste and mix, let cook for 3 minutes.

Then add the cooked chayote and mix to integrate everything; you can season a little more with salt to taste, although it may not be necessary since you cooked the chayote with salt.

Finally, add a little grated panela cheese or quesillo and serve the chayotes Mexican style. To eat!
